A plain-English guide
What Is BaZi?
BaZi — “eight characters”, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny — is one of the oldest systems China has for reading a life. Here is what it is, without the mysticism.
The four pillars
BaZi turns a birth date and time into four pairs of characters: the year pillar, month pillar, day pillar and hour pillar — eight characters in total. Each pillar combines a heavenly stem and an earthly branch from the traditional Chinese calendar, which runs on a sixty-year cycle.
The reason the hour matters is simple: at different times of day the hour pillar changes, and with it the balance of the whole chart. That is why a good BaZi reading asks for the exact time of birth, not just the date.
The day master is “you”
Of the eight characters, the one most often read as the self is the day master — the stem of the day pillar. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it: which elements strengthen it, which drain it, and which elements the chart is “asking for”.
A day master is never simply strong or weak. The chart is read as a whole: the season of birth, the support from other pillars, and the balance of all five elements. That is why two people born on the same day can have quite different readings.
The five elements
BaZi reads the world through five energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — which generate and control one another in a fixed cycle. A chart with a lot of Water is not “better” than a chart with a lot of Fire; the question is balance, and what the chart needs to feel at ease.
You can explore the cycle on our Five Elements page.
Ten gods: the relationships in a chart
After the four pillars, most readings map each character against the day master and give it one of ten roles — the so-called “ten gods”, with names like Direct Officer, Direct Wealth or Companion. They are relationship archetypes, not deities: they describe how the energy in the chart behaves toward the self.
What BaZi is not
BaZi is not a science, and it does not predict specific events. It is a symbolic tradition that people have used for centuries to think about character and timing. On Pilarya the chart is calculated deterministically — the same birth data always gives the same chart — while the reading is an interpretation, marked as entertainment. We never guarantee outcomes about health, money, or relationships.

Frequently asked
- What is BaZi?
- A Chinese system that turns a birth date and time into four pairs of calendar characters, read as elements and relationships relative to the day master.
- Is it the same as Western astrology?
- No — different calendar (stems and branches rather than planets) and a different vocabulary. Both are symbolic systems, read as entertainment here.
- What do I need to calculate it?
- Your birth date and your birth time. The time changes the hour pillar and the balance of the chart.
- Is BaZi scientific?
- No. It is a traditional symbolic framework, not an empirical science. We label all readings as entertainment.
